It has been almost a year since I left the classroom to fully pursue my dream of running my own business. Kimberly Frey Consulting LLC was formed back in 2021, and I had been working it as a side hustle for a couple of years. During this time, I was still exploring what the scope of services would be and even what my mission and vision were.

My Journey to Solopreneurship

Throughout the beginning of 2023, I had some promising (paid!) opportunities that I was able to participate in which had me excited to be able to pursue more. I was invited to speak for several businesses on disability inclusivity, I was a featured life coach at a prominent women’s conference, and I signed my first life coaching client. There were also some opportunities that I wasn’t able to pursue because of the conflict with my teaching schedule, such as presenting for office lunch and learn sessions. Reflecting on this, I realized that the only way I was going to make my business grow like I wanted it to was if I actually started working my business as I needed to.

Leaving the security of my full-time job, and the paycheck that accompanied it, was both exhiliarating and terrifying at the same time. I was passionate about my mission of helping others live their best lives while making the world a more inclusive place.

Fast forward to the present, and all I can say is that my first year of solopreneurship has been quite the adventure. There is a significant learning curve to running your own business, especially when you are under the pressure of funding it yourself.

While I am far from a business expert, I am an expert at helping others achieve their goals. That is my whole purpose as a life coach. Throughout this past year, I have been drawing from the lessons I share with my clients to guide me as I achieve one of the biggest goals I’ve ever set for myself.

My Top Guiding Lessons
  1. Believe in yourself. This is the foundation that everything else is built on. You have to believe that you are capable of achieving the goals you have set for yourself. They might need to be revised at times or you might have to pivot to get there, but believing that you will get there is the most fundamental key.
  2. Set goals. I’ve used that word several times in this post, but I can’t use them enough. Dreams without actionable goals attached to them will remain dreams. Goals create the structure that allows dreams to grow. I have short-term goals, long-term goals, and even daily goals. They help keep me accountable and focused, plus I feel fabulous when I accomplish them!
  3. Build your village. We’ve all heard that it takes a village to raise a child, but did you know the same is true when starting a business? We all need a community to support us, especially as a solopreneur. There’s so much that I don’t know, and even more that I don’t know that I don’t know. The most important business capital I’ve built this year is a network of people who are willing to share their expertise, networks, and resources to help me succeed. You have to be willing to put yourself out there with others and build true relationships that will benefit not just you, but those you are in relationship with.
Final Reflections

This year has been full of ups and downs, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love the work that I do and seeing my dreams turning into reality. As I get ready to head into year two, I am excited about all that is in store. The women’s wellness event series that I co-host continues to grow, I have some new partnerships that will bring even more opportunities, and my podcast is launching in just a few weeks.

Are you currently a solopreneur or considering becoming one? Or maybe you have a side hustle that you dream about turning into a full-time gig?
