I was at a networking lunch the other day when one of the attendees was sharing his story about his experience on the elevator coming up. The elevators for the building that we were in were the kind where you press the button for the floor to which you want to go and then are told in which elevator to enter. The elevator then takes you directly to that floor. This attendee had accidentally gotten into an open elevator without telling it what floor he wanted. Therefore, once the doors shut, the elevator started going up and down randomly because it had been given no destination. Since there are no buttons inside the elevator to select a floor, he had to wait until the elevator was called to a different floor by someone else. That way the doors would open, he could exit, and then call for a new elevator with the correct floor.
As he was telling us about his experience, the first thought I had was, “What a horrible feeling to be stuck in an elevator!” Even knowing it was only momentarily, I would still have some anxiety about knowing that I was trapped there. The second thought I had was, “What a fitting analogy to how we often go through life.”
You see, many times we can be just like this attendee was – trapped in an uncomfortable or nerve-wracking situation because we forgot to decide on where our end destination should be. We are faced with a multitude of decisions every day, and without knowing what we want to achieve, it is often difficult to determine which decision is the right one.
As a former classroom teacher, one of my teaching mantras was to begin with the end in mind. The foundation for a successful teacher is knowing where you want your students to be at the end of the year and then creating a plan to successfully get them there. This same philosophy can be used successfully in your own personal life. In order to make the best decisions to support your success, you have to first decide what that looks like for you. Because just as there are many different floors in a building to which the elevator can stop, there are many different ways to be successful. What one person determines equates success for themselves does not have be to the definition of success for someone else. The key is to decide what you want your end destination to be, and then create the plan for how to get there.
If you are someone who knows where you want your elevator to stop but are struggling to land on the right floor, I am the technician who can help you work out the kinks to get you there. I am an expert at helping others turn their dreams into concrete goals and helping them create actionable plans to get there. If you are the person who isn’t sure of where to start, I have decades of experience supporting people in identifying that first step. Because success doesn’t look the same for everyone, I don’t have just one approach in my work with clients. I create customized paths designed to meet you where you are and help you get to where you want to go.
In order to get to where you want to go, you’ve got to first decide where it is you want to be. Let’s work together to begin with the end in mind so that you are in the right life elevator. You can do it. I can help.
